Nitrogen vs Air in Tyres – Is Nitrogen Worth It for UK Drivers?

|22 February 2025|5 min read

Tyre centres often charge extra for nitrogen inflation. But is it actually better than regular air for everyday Glasgow drivers? We look at the science.

Many premium tyre centres charge an additional fee to inflate your tyres with nitrogen rather than compressed air. The green valve caps you sometimes see on tyre valves indicate the tyre is nitrogen-inflated. The argument for nitrogen is that it is a more stable, drier gas that maintains tyre pressure more consistently and doesn't react with the tyre's internal rubber compounds. But is it worth the extra cost for everyday drivers in Glasgow?

The science is real but the practical benefits are modest for standard road use. Nitrogen does migrate through tyre rubber more slowly than standard air (which is 78% nitrogen anyway, with about 21% oxygen and trace gases). This means nitrogen-inflated tyres lose pressure slightly more slowly over time. Nitrogen is also virtually moisture-free, whereas compressed air can contain trace moisture that contributes to internal corrosion of alloy and steel wheels over long periods.

In practice, however, independent testing has found that the difference in pressure retention between nitrogen and air is small for everyday passenger car use – perhaps 1 to 2 PSI over the course of several months. This is easily offset by simply checking and correcting your tyre pressure monthly, which you should be doing regardless. The main beneficiaries of nitrogen are motorsport applications (Formula 1 and endurance racing, where consistent tyre behaviour at extreme temperatures matters enormously) and aircraft, where moisture-free tyres reduce corrosion risk significantly.

Our honest recommendation for Glasgow drivers: use nitrogen if your tyre centre offers it for free, but don't pay a premium for it on standard road tyres. Regular pressure checks with compressed air are more than adequate for everyday driving. Top Tech Mobile Tyres inflates all tyres to the correct pressure as part of every fitting visit.
