Run Flat Tyres – Pros, Cons and What Happens When They Go Wrong

|28 January 2025|6 min read

Run flat tyres are standard on many modern BMWs and Minis. Discover when they need replacing, why they can't always be repaired, and how Top Tech can help in Glasgow.

Run flat tyres (RFTs) are designed with reinforced sidewalls that can support the weight of the vehicle even when the tyre is fully deflated, allowing you to continue driving at reduced speed (typically up to 50mph for up to 50 miles) after a puncture. They are fitted as standard on most BMW and Mini models, and increasingly on other vehicles from Mercedes, BMW, and Cadillac. They allow manufacturers to remove the spare wheel, saving weight and boot space.

The main advantage of run flat tyres is safety – you can drive to a tyre fitting centre after a puncture rather than changing a wheel at the roadside, which is particularly valuable in poor weather or on a motorway. The major disadvantage is cost and repairability. Run flat tyres typically cost significantly more than equivalent standard tyres, and in most cases they cannot be safely repaired after a puncture. The reinforced sidewall can sustain damage when driven in the deflated condition even within the manufacturer's 50-mile limit, making internal inspection essential before any repair attempt.

Because most run flat tyre vehicles don't carry a spare, a flat or damage tyre means immediate replacement is required – you cannot simply fit the spare and drive to a tyre garage later. This is where mobile tyre fitting is particularly valuable. Top Tech Mobile Tyres carries run flat tyres in the most common sizes, including popular BMW and Mini specifications, and can fit them at your location across Glasgow.

If your BMW, Mini, or other run flat-equipped vehicle has a deflated or damaged tyre anywhere in Glasgow, call Top Tech Mobile Tyres on 0141 673 5765. We'll come to you, check whether the tyre can be repaired, and fit a replacement run flat on the spot if needed. Don't risk further sidewall damage by driving on it – call us first.
