A 5-minute monthly tyre check can prevent accidents, MOT failures, and expensive tyre damage. Here's the complete checklist from Glasgow's mobile tyre experts.
Your tyres are the only part of your car in contact with the road. Spending five minutes a month checking them could prevent an accident, help you pass your MOT, and save you from an expensive emergency tyre replacement at the roadside. Here's the complete monthly tyre safety checklist used by our technicians at Top Tech Mobile Tyres in Glasgow.
Check 1 – Tread Depth: Use a tread depth gauge or the 20p coin test on all four tyres. The legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread for at least three-quarters of the tyre's circumference. We recommend replacing tyres at 3mm, especially in Scotland's wet conditions. Check the tread depth in three places across the tyre width – inner, centre, and outer edge – to identify uneven wear that might indicate alignment or pressure issues.
Check 2 – Tyre Pressure: Check all four tyres (and the spare if applicable) when cold, using a reliable gauge. Compare to the pressures in your owner's manual or door jamb sticker. Inflate or deflate as needed. Check 3 – Visual Inspection: Walk around the car and carefully examine each tyre for cuts, bulges, cracks, embedded objects (nails, screws, glass), and any deformation of the tread or sidewall. Any bulge or deep cut is immediate cause for replacement. Check 4 – Age: If your vehicle is more than five years old, check the DOT manufacture date code on each tyre sidewall. Tyres over ten years old should be replaced regardless of condition.
Check 5 – Spare Wheel: Don't neglect the spare tyre. Check its pressure and condition – a flat or cracked spare is useless in an emergency. If any of these checks raise concerns, call Top Tech Mobile Tyres in Glasgow on 0141 673 5765. We'll come to your location, carry out a professional inspection, and fit replacements on the spot if needed. Stay safe on Scotland's roads.
